Expert summary
Human rights designate the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled. They can be broadly classified into two. One area is that of civil and political rights like the right to life and property, freedom of expression, and equality before the law. There are also social, cultural and economic rights such as the right to participate in culture, the right to food, the right to work, and the right to education. The history of human rights has a very long history. There are several valuable documents, like Magna Carta, which helped in framing the modern ideas on human rights. Several philosophers like Paine, Mill and Hegel also gave invaluable contributions.
